Ed Armstrong I guess I read this book in maybe 1974 or 1975. I like Herman Wouk but I think the reason I enjoyed this book and its sequel is that it created a mood which I believe existed in this country during the Second World War and the years immediately prior to and subsequent to our involvement therein. People "hung" together. The country was together and people did what they had to do to cope with the difficulties and tragedies involved. Wouk, I think, is a master at character development and I became more aware of this ability when I read this book.
