** spoiler alert ** I haven't read a Alice Hoffman book in a few years so was looking forward to her blending of magic realism, fairy tale elements, and wonderful imagery. The Story Sisters magic, though, is darker than usual and tinged with evil; the plot includes child rape, divorce, drug abuse, estrangement, a deadly car accident, cancer, an overdose, more estrangement; even with the hopeful ending, it was just too relentlessly sad.

Still Hoffman's writing is lovely and often redemptive. I loved the image of Meg writing the word orange on a
saved slip of paper to remind her of a day in Paris making pear tarts in the sunlight with her sister and grandmother. Illumination Night and Practical Magic stay my favorite Alice Hoffman novels.
