Narayan's capacity to say even the most complex things in a simple way is remarkable. Its a very interesting story of a young poor boy whose aspirations to grow in life makes him in a clever Guide as a young man and then he makes fortune as an owner of a dance company where in an unfortunate event he ends up in a Jail. When he comes out he moves to an unknown place where people mistake him a Saint and he begins to live a carefree life of a pseudo-saint. But then the most important thing happens to him which is the crux of the novel.
The events are dramatic and language simple and sarcastic. The characters are symbolic at another plain and at last the establishment of Faith is central to the message of the novel. This work has also been adapted into a successful Bollywood movie starring Dev Anand and Vahida Rehman.
