I got an advanced copy of this book at ALA, and this fact alone made the whole conference worthwhile. Lorrie Moore is an incredible writer with some of the most amazing, magical and put-the-book-down-because-you-can't-believe-how-awesome-this-sentence-is prose I have ever read. I worship her!

In A Gate at the Stairs, Tassie Keltjin, our narrator, is a 20 year old who looks at and lives life with the detached air that only an undergraduate studying philosophy can possess. She takes a job as the nanny for a couple who has just adopted a mixed race child, and the book chronicles the year in which Tassie cares for this child, learns too many secrets, hears too many confessions, and is touched by tragedies both large and small. The story takes place just after 9-11, and woven into the narrative are issues raised by war, death, terrorism, classism, racism and privilege. An artful story, a perfect narrative, a painful beauty - this book is why I love reading so very much.

It is published officially in September. Reserve your copy now!
