it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy
Read in August, 2009

I couldn't decide for about 100 pages if I was really going to like it all that much - meaning the input of time vs the output of enjoyment. (It's almost 600 pages.) Then a few particularly rewarding passages convinced me this was going to be worth it.

I have to mention the laugh I got about the names in this book. They are your typically hard to pronounce fantasy character names. I found myself wondering, as my brain stumbled over name after name, "why can't we have a fantasy protagonist named Jane, or William?" But lo and behold, the author used *real* names from early Pict history. That'll teach me. At least they didn't all have apostrophes in them....

Themes of duty, loyalty, right, respecting nature, struggling to know if your faith is right, lonliness, friendship, shallow people, pagan vs Christian, scholarship....

Already started the second book.
