A psychiatrist who works at a state hospital for the criminally insane takes under her wing a patient who, sixteen years ago, brutally murdered a family with whom he was staying. Then the psychiatrist is murdered by someone using the same MO as the institutionalized murderer. Only she was murdered outside the institution, and the murderer was in the institution, plus years of drug therapy has rendered him unable to function. Consulting psychologist Alex Delaware is called upon to resolve this case, and he finds more than he bargained for.
