great except for the third quarter, which drags. the rest is the best kind of existentialism - breezy, day to day, anxious and melancholy in a fun, almost upbeat way. and that's a real testament to the author's dexterity, given that the protagonist is somewhat of a sociopath.

at first i thought the end was either a total cop-out or hugely subversive, but the more i think about the philosophical precedents to this book it seems to fit perfectly.
