Absolutely fascinating distillation of 13 years travel in Central Asia (primarily between the Gansu Corridor and Turpan) by two intrepid female missionaries in the 1920s and 30s. I sincerely wish I had read this book before my first trip to the region. I've now travelled the Silk Road's northern and southern routes several times and still learned so much -- about sites now lost, its flora and fauna, original names, etc. A marvellous find, as fresh and entertaining as any newer work today on the same region.
