This is a meticulously researched account of the First Battle of Mogadishu. The depth of the reporting is impressive; obviously the focus is on the American and United Nations forces involved but there are also many Somali perspectives. I found the book to be even-handed, particularly in looking at the politics behind the military missions. The level of detail is enormous and the insights into what goes through a soldier's mind during a battle are extremely compelling.
