Reasons I liked this book

1. Absolutely raw. No sugar-coating.
2. When I'm working with traumatized kids and they flip for what seems like no reason, I often wonder what the hell just happened in their heads. I appreciated getting a glimpse into the mind of Precious and thought, "Ah, that makes sense," every time she lost it with someone who was trying to help her. This is useful stuff in a career that requires empathy.
3. I like books in which the lead is not beautiful, well-educated and glamorous. Precious is pretty damn real.
4. The language seems pretty right on and made me wonder a lot about Sapphire and how she got the ability to write like that. It seemed natural to speak as Precious.
5. I found Precious, her teacher and her friends damaged but extremely likable characters.
