This book took me years to read. Literally. And it's a problem with my reading speed and devotion. I did just read The Stand recently, in maybe six weeks, with no real problems, after all. I think I just don't have the kind of patience you would need for a novel from this time period. I admit, I had pretty much the same experience with Les Miserables. I won't deny it's an important book, and with a dose of humanity and realism that was probably a little rare for its time. Still, I can't forgive the pages upon pages of philosophical droning. I came for a story, not a lesson in religion and freewill.

I did care enough to finish, not just because of my problem with completionism, but because I genuinely wanted to know what happened to the characters. Still, I can't say it was a truly great ride.
