90% of what I understand about statistics, I owe to this guy. This book is thorough, clear, and, yes, funny. Filled with self-deprecating humor, interesting study examples,* and multiple references to Field's favorite rock band (Fugazi) and his cat, the book also comes with a handy dandy CD-ROM which contains sample exercises and syntax codes. Step-by-step instructions on which keys to press and detailed instructions on their functions make this one a must-have for every beginner in both the subject (statistics) and the program (SPSS).

*e.g. The Beer Goggles and Lighting Effect, a study on the effects of alcohol consumption and dim lighting on the ratings of the attractiveness of members of the opposite sex
