The first of the eponymous series, inspired by Dumas' historical fiction for the masses. Perez-Reverte admirably succeeds in his goal of similarly dramatizing Spanish history to educate a modern audience. The heroes are dashing and the swashes are thoroughly buckled. All in all a vivid and frank portrait of a 17th century Spain just past its zenith but not yet embarked on its long descent.
