Simply the best book I read that year.

Ruth, I know this book is much beloved but I just didn't grasp it to my bosom like I had hoped for. It might be that I have lost the taste for more subtle, European works, but this left me cold. Because it wasn't a failure of the author but a lack of insight on my own end(I suspect)I still gave it three stars.

What didn't come to life for me? Maybe it just seemed too obviously symbolic. Was anyone anywhere indifferent to this book besides me? I feel so unclever. But that's the kind of book it strikes me as: a book for people who want to show that they are clever. That they get serious literature.(And I don't mean you, Ruth). Maybe my own tastes have just become stupidly proletariet.

Xio Donald, this is exactly exactly how I felt about this book. After awhile I just put it down, so points to you for having more patience...

Ruth, no offense intended! Just the book...
