Usually I'm not a big fan of short fiction. I tend not to be satisfied with appetizers ... I want the full five course meal plus the chocolate mints that come with the check. Short stories ... like appetizers, leave me hungry, not quite satisfied, and in some cases, down right cranky. There are exceptions and this collection of short fantasies is one. The reader will find a nice section of well known authors such as Jim Butcher, P. N. Elrod, Charlaine Harris and Patricia Briggs ... all four tell a good story. The other contributors: Rachel Caine. Karen Chance. Faith Hunter, Caitlin Kittredge and Jenna Maclaine do a fair job.

Unfortunately, one of the big draw backs on several of these stories is if you're not already familiar with the author's ongoing series, you'll find yourself at a disadvantage from the start, which makes it harder to follow the story.
