This is a kids book that is probably best left to kids.
It's interesting, but getting in the way is the unnecessary length and the way the main character (and other kids) think through their feelings and decisions. Almost like the author is trying to model how children should behave.
All that said, I liked it enough to read it all the way through, and I'm the type to just not finish a book if it isn't holding my interest. But I read the end quickly, just so I could find out how it shakes out.
