Young boy exiled from London during World War II gets sucked through a portal away from his British country home into a terrifying world of magic, strange creatures, and dire peril. No, this isn't The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but something far darker and (much) more grisly. The author freely acknowledges and winks at his sources, from C.S. Lewis to Disney (these seven dwarves don't sing "Hi ho", but about the burdens of the proletariat, and Walt never dreamed of this Snow White), also managing to give Angela Carter a good for her money. People seem to love or hate this book (mostly the latter) but I really enjoyed it and I find it still is haunting the corners of my brain a day later.
