Not as great as Carter Beats the Devil, and much more experimental in form, but a fascinating and ultimately satisfying read nonetheless.

Both of Gold's novels to date have been based around real people and true events, which I find can be a bit distracting (it's hard not to start thinking "did this really happen?" or "did this person really exist?"). It was less so for me reading Carter, as I didn't even realize Carter was a real person. But at times this felt like a very intimate bio of Chaplin rather than a novel. I would love to see Gold's gifts turned toward wholly fictional characters and situations.
