I was very surprised at this book because Maugham delved into the fantastic. To me Maugham's writing style is very straight-forward, observational, and real. I was not expecting him to describe fantastical creatures and go into supernatural themes. I did not give this book five stars because-while the rest of the book was very good- I don't think the ending was as good as it could have been. It was a bit predictable and didn't leave me shivering at humanity like all the other novels I have read by him. It was very interesting to me that Maugham knew and "took an immediate dislike," to Aleister Crowley, and based the character Oliver Haddo off of him. I feel that most of the things Maugham attributes to the Haddo character were true of Crowley.
