So far, not nearly as good as Fly by Night. I get the sense of a smart writer with a kind of dull gimmick. Hardinge might want to stick with Smart Orphan in Hostile Environment in future; the Band of Misfits + Charismatic Bad Boy isn't really coming together. Then again I have no attention span today so perhaps the problem lies with me.

The last few chapters picked up the pace quite a bit and added some spooky fantastic elements. Angry gods and natural disasters, real adults becoming frightened or frightening. With a little patience this would turn out to be a thrilling fantasy. Eva Ibbotson readers or fans of the Golden and Grey series might like it. Perhaps even Potter fans, but everyone's a Potter fan so that doesn't really narrow it down.
