it was amazing
bookshelves: sci-fi, horror
Read in July, 2009

** spoiler alert ** This book is a COMPLETELY different entity from the movie, I can hardly reconcile the 2 in my mind. The main differences:

1. Neville's race is explicitly stated, which I thought was amusing
2. He's not a doctor or scientist, he gets his knowledge from books
3. He's much more depressed and aggro than in the film
4. The dog only plays a small role in the book
5. The vampires still look human, unlike their appearance in the film
6. The vampires are capable of more intelligent thought and speech
7. Neville's wife and child died, unlike in the film portrayal
8. The germ responsible for the plague mutates and people adapt and are able to get along with the use of a pill, despite being infected
10. Ruth doesnt bring a kid along with her. They way they meet differs too
11. The book is set in California, the film in NYC
12. Neither of the film endings are really a reflection of the novel ending (although the alternative ending is supposed to be more faithful?)
13. He gets abducted and eventually executed by the people that have adapted to live with the disease

That being said, I like the film and I like the book, theyre just entirely different entities and should be considered separately. The ending to the book is much more dramatic and tragic :( I prefer Robert Neville in the movie to be honest, not gonna lie, I got annoyed by his drinking problem and aggression in the book.
