it was amazing
Read in January, 1982

My parents had a BBC version of this on vinyl when I was about 3-4 years old, and they taped it for me onto four or five analog tapes that I listened to every morning. I'd spend hours and hours at the beginning of each day listening to the British actor read these words, taking them to heart and memorizing them until they became rote. By the time I was five, you could start me at any point in the book and I could continue on, word for word spilling out of my young mouth. I remember gathering three or four of my friends together after Sunday School one day, sitting them down, and beginning to tell them this story:
" In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
I think I got that far before my tale was shut down by parents seeking their kids, and as I aged, I forgot and lost that wonderful ability kids have to make words and stories and languages utterly their own so easily.
My parents bought that BBC version of the Hobbit anew a few years back. I really should dig it out and listen to it. Maybe some ancient synapse in my brain will start firing again, and it will all come rushing back.
