While this is a perfectly acceptable beach read, I could not really get into this book. I had read "Chocolat" by the same author and found that one preferable. This book has the aspect of an Englishman going to France and how he adjusts to the small village of characters. It also has this mystical aspect of the reappearance of a former adult figure Joe who befriended the main character when he was a young teen going through his parents' divorce in England. I found the sketches of the characters rather incomplete; his girlfriend is lightly described while a gypsy figure is carefully painted.

Kasa Cotugno I have a problem with her books, as well as those of Anita Shreve. Neither of them knows how to complete a book or as you point out, create a rounded characterization.
