Moose Flanagan is 12 years old in 1935 when his family makes him move to Alcatraz – an island in California where there is a prison for the worst criminals, including the famous gangster Al Capone. He doesn’t want to be here, but his mother intends to send his autistic sister, Natalie to a special school near there, and his father is able to get two jobs – as an electrician and a prison guard. Moose is usually a pretty well-behaved, rule-following boy, but then he meets Piper Williams, the warden’s bossy and beautiful daughter who likes to live dangerously, and suddenly danger is all around. This is a funny, historical fiction, coming of age book with a very likeable main character.
