The book takes place during the Great Depression in the American south. Through the eyes of six year old Scout, the reader is taken through the joys and the innocence of childhood. Scout is raised by her middle-age father and the black family maid, as her mother died when she was much younger. She spends most of her time attempting to get out of school, playing with the neighborhood boys, putting on plays with her older brother and best friend, and taunting the reclusive man who lives next door.

When Scout is a year or two older, her father takes on a controversial law case. A black man named Tom Robinson is accused of raping a younger white woman. Scout’s father acts to defend Robinson in strong believe that he is obviously innocent of the alleged crime. Because of the ties Scout’s family accumulates with this case, Scout’s childhood innocence seems to wither. She matures quickly, suddenly understanding her reclusive neighbor’s need to hide from such a world.

To Kill a Mockingbird is an American classic. I was in a lot of honors and college credit English in school. As a result, I somehow skipped a lot of classic literature considered a must-read for any book lover. This is one of those classics I’ve been dying to read for years, and one any well-read individual should invest a few hours reading.
