"The old adage--humor is the best way to make the unbearable bearable--may be true."

Wonderful epistolary tale about a group of people brought together via their love for books (could there be a better story?) Also chronicles the German Occupation of an island called Guernsey (located in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy--one of the "Channel Islands") during World War II, illustrating the cruelty of the Nazis via stories about it's victims and survivors.

One of the most memorable accounts is how during the occupation, many Guernsey children were sent to England to live with strangers or family. Some returned to have their homes and families destroyed, some never returned...

Of all the things that happened during the war, this one--making your children go away to try to keep them safe--was surely the most terrible. I don't know how they endured it. It defies the animal instinct to protect your young.

Classic novel. Sweet, and bittersweet stories. Can't remember when I've hated so much for a book to end.
