** spoiler alert ** I feel like I should explain giving this book just three stars, since it's a multiple award-winner and all. My ratings here are determinedly subjective; I don't rate how "good" I think a book is, I rate how much I enjoyed it.

I found the narrative style frustrating at times -- like I had to glimpse the events of the book through a shifting curtain of characters' thoughts and feelings and poetry. Also, I was troubled by the child abuse, the way it seemed to be excused (he only hurts him because he loves him so much?) and the odd fairy-tale ending. Actually I'm not even sure the ending was meant to be real -- maybe actually Joe died jumping over the bluff, and Kerewin died of her cancer, and Simon stayed in the last foster family?

Anyway, I really did enjoy the book, but I had those problems with it, too!
