Shadow is released from prison a day earlier than he expected after serving three years of a six year sentence for beating some men. He learns that his wife Laura has recently died in a car crash with a friend and future employer at the Muscle Farm. On his way home, Shadow meets a man with a glass eye named Wednesday, who hires Shadow to drive him from place to place around the US, and should things go badly to keep a vigil should Wednesday die. Shadows adventures become difficult to distinguish from his dreams as Wednesday takes him or sends him from place to place meeting gods and other mythical beings like Mr. Nancy, Czernobog, the Zorya sisters, Mr. Ibis and Jacquel (and many more). Gradually it becomes clear that Shadow has a far more central role in Wednesdays plans than to serve as chauffer. This is a book for which a familiarity with world mythology is useful.
