I have enjoyed this author in previous writings, but at first, this one strikes me as a chore. She seems to work too hard at every subtle nuance, phrase, turn of the verb, etc. and thus there is not much pleasure in following her. It begins as though you are reading an English teacher's writing displaying her brilliance for her classes.
After she is done setting her scene, her writing improves with the action, thus the second half of the book reads more smoothly, and the story line is very good.
