It really doesn't seem to matter how many times I read this book, I seem to find new things to cry at or marvel at every time. I love these books. Tolkien, for all that he is perhaps not the best story teller, is still a genius.

2010 relisten: oh my gosh, y'all. Listening to this book on cd is HILARIOUS. Remember all the times that characters stop whatever they're doing and burst into song? Sometimes for several pages? Picture that happening while going through the drive thru at Starbucks. Or any time, really, because it is HILARIOUS.

But otherwise a very enjoyable experience.

Quotes Merrin Liked

J.R.R. Tolkien
“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

J.R.R. Tolkien
“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

J.R.R. Tolkien
“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

J.R.R. Tolkien
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
