A "gentle read" along the lines of Anne of Green Gables: 12 year old Calpurnia "Callie Vee" Virginia Tate is the only girl sandwiched between 3 older brothers and 3 younger brothers, in 1899 Texas. A tomboy through and through, Callie chafes under the restrictions for girls; she'd much rather be outside exploring nature or tucked away with a good adventure book than inside learning how to cook (badly) or sew (not much better). Then one day her scientific curiosity leads her to borrow Charles Darwin's book from the town library. But to her horror the librarian won't lend such a controversial book to her! (Shame on that 19th century librarian.) However, her eccentric but intimidating Grandfather reveals he has a personal copy, which he secretly lends her, and she discovers he's a budding naturalist. They form a new relationship of teacher and student. Together they just might discover a whole new species--but along the way Calpurnia learns more about science and her family, too. This is a fun sweet book, with humor in Callie's voice as she tells anecdotes about her family and the trials and tribulations of being a less-than-perfect girl among so many boys. This book is also about self-discovery, and how bittersweet it can be to realize you are suited for one job but must give up your dreams in order not disappoint your family or scandalize society. Very well-written, detailed and charming.
