An interesting and very informative story. I knew about the leper colony on Moloka'i, but nothing more than it existed, and the details were both horrifying and heartwarming.

I found the dialogue very contemporary, which made it hard to remember that the story began in the Victorian era and continued from there, and when I did remind myself, it took me out of the story.

I never got emotionally involved with the characters. I think they were written just a tad too clinically to really warm up to them.
