It had the makings of a really compelling story... an independent, strong, intellectual woman forges her own way at a time and place where such things just didn't happen. An early feminist example. But, then she had to go and ruin it by making her run screaming back to servility and get all preachy about God in the last twenty-five pages or so. Still, a unique bildungsromance and much better than I expected considering my opinion of anything with the Bronte name attached to it going into it.
