I didn't know if I would like this. I mostly read it because I picked it up for the library for free and I am trying to update our sci-fi selections for and 8th grade unit that happens each year. I need to be able to booktalk something besides Feed. I was happily surprised - the science is pretty intense, but there are computer-aided codebreakers, nerds and a cool big brother who rides a Harley. It is set in New Zealand, but was not full of too much lingo that students would have trouble with. It was intelligent, suspenseful and had enough emotional are-we-friends-or-more angst, dead and/or depressed parents, my-brother- is-cooler-than-me to be a good YA book. Clean enough for any middle-schooler: nerd or not. It's a bit on the long side, but it is suspenseful enough that if a student isn't deadset against reading, it won't be a problem.
