I really loved this book. The idea of balance and 'grey wizards' is one that isn't often touched. People are either good or bad, serving the side of light or darkness. In Recluce white is shown as chaos (remember that the color we perceive as white is the blending of all the colors of the spectrum, thus a chaos of colors) and black is order (black being the absence of any color) but our character is in that thin line of grey, who doesn't need to be entirely good, nor entirely bad, but can be what he feels is right.

I read this on vacation and it made a great read. I was a little disappointed when I picked up the second book however. I wanted to stick with the character of this book, and he seemed to have vanished.
