I have not yet had the opportunity to read any other books by this author, but I loved this one. It is set in contemporary LA which most people know (and either love or hate) for all of the wrong reasons. This book gives the reader a twenty foot view of life in Southern California. The life that does not first come to mind when thinking of LA. It is more "Chinatown" than the "OC" (sorry for mixing medias, but you know what I mean). Personally, I was captured at the opening when Crais described the "snow storm" of ash pushed from wildfires in the San Gabriel Mountains by the hot Santa Ana winds to downtown Los Angeles. It reminded me of fires outside San Diego which often left a dusting of ash on my car, surfboards, beach cruiser and anything else outside. One year the fires were so bad that the noon sun was blocked out and street lights came on in the afternoon. There is a seriously dark side of SoCal. Check it out.
