If I could give it another half star, I would. 3 for the first half and 4 for the last. Nothing about the story felt new to me. I'm not saying that she isn't original, it's just that I read His Dark Materials, Harry Potter and Twilight all before this one so some of the battles and twists in the plot felt "gently used." My biggest complaint is that the character development felt a little shallow. I didn't come out of the story feeling like I could really define any one character very well except for Simon and, maybe, Clary. For most of the story, I enjoyed that you could see things from other characters' perspectives but it didn't help me with defining the characters. I wish she'd spent a little more time on that. I love nothing more in a good book than some witty and spiced exchanges in dialogue so I was disappointed sometimes when the exchanges went on with no significance to the characters or the story.

It took me a little longer than I expected to become really invested in this book BUT when it did grab my interest it was hard to put down, I give it that. And in the end, aside from the hurried Clary-Jace resolution (not hard to see that coming but I was still peeved), I was mostly content with how the story left off. I anticipate that the second in the series will resolve my little gripes.
