Brundage is a wonderful writer who definitely has a penchant for the dark and dramatic. Her writing is several levels above simply "plot" - you are reading a book with "craft" to it. I also read her first book, The Doctor's Wife, and had the same "Oh my God" reactions to many of the things that take place. And as implausible as some of the plot seems, what makes it good is that, really, you know people aren't incapable of such things. Great read.
