This was one of my favorites books from when I was a kid! The 1961 Newbery winner, Island of the Blue Dolphins is the story of a girl who ends up living alone on an island. At first, her brother is with her, but after his tragic death, she is completely alone. I loved this book because of how strong and clever the main character, Karana was. She's 12 at the start of the book, but is able to care for her younger brother, find food, and create clothing and shelter for them both. Based on a true story, this is way better than "Survivor"!
