The plot isn’t what I’ll remember most about this book. Which is not fair to say, because it was a wonderful plot full of wistfulness, horror, and just a little otherworldliness. What’s going to stay with me for a long time is Fowler’s depiction of London life during the Blitz. Granted, it’s a work of fiction, but the matter-of-fact way air raids, bombs, and shelters are treated as just another part of the characters’ lives makes me want to find a true-life account. Good thing I work in a library.
