Cather explores spiritual devotion, platonic friendship, and the complex interactions between European and New Mexican cultures. The novel is somewhat aloof, due to the method of telling, and certain sections are drawn out while others pass too quickly. Cather's description of the landscape and wilderness is, as always, excellent.
