I guess you get away with writing about poltergeists, the occult, and being a goth by being playful about it in both tone and form and underwriting it all with real loss and a sort of wry plaintiveness. "The Short Aeneid" is tremendous. So is just flipping around the book and reading in a non-linear fashion, which the 2 column, simultaneous structure of the poems often encourages. Example:

but the car ride momma
eye of night gallery
boy abandoned in mascara
she falls down painting feet first
you're not scanning the OED
and I picture the flesh parting beneath my teeth
