it was amazing
Read in June, 2009

I love Lorrie Moore unconditionally, like a dumbstruck teen, and A Gate at the Stairs (her most novel-ish novel yet) reaffirms and renews that love. Here is some of the finest yet of her brutal, gorgeous, pun-soaked prose, that tension between witty satire and raw, real human connection. This novel is not neat or clean or even particularly well-structured, and there are several sections that I'd urge her to condense or cut entirely (were I lucky enough to be her editor!), but the story at this book's center is amazing, as is its main character and voice--and so the book as a whole, whatever its flaws, is no less than amazing, too. I'm still processing, and I need to read it again, but when the novel comes out in September, I'll attempt to say something more specific (puns and all) on Fiction Writers Review.
