This is a lovely story that deals with the issues of dementia/Alzheimers and the impact it can have on children.

Pearl lives with her mother and grandmother, who suffers with Alzheimers. Pearl's situation at home makes her feel isolated and alone at school, although she finds some comfort in being able to write about her feelings using poetry.

This story is written in free verse and this creates a very powerful impression as Pearl's story is brought back to her own expression of her feelings of loneliness, grief and frustration.

This story is more likely to appeal to girls and would be a wonderful tool for teachers to prompt class discussions about friendships and loneliness. My 8 year old daughter loved this book and was very moved by the story.
