** spoiler alert ** This is a charming debut novel, that tells the story of young Groovy Robinson, an aspiring chef who is crestfallen when she learns her father has gambled away her savings and her mother has reported him to the police.

While Groovy's father is in jail, she learns about the power of forgiveness in her life and others as she watches her best friend Frankie struggle with his mother's abandonment and realizes that things are not always as simple as they appear.

Fitzmaurice has created a cast of interesting characters that come together in the small town of San Juan Capistano, a place filled with beauty, friendship, talent, hurt and the promise that the swallows will come back every year.
