This book was bucking for four stars but the last twenty pages ruined it. The "final battle" was oddly staged, confusing and not very well written. I ended up skimming it. The conclusion was also disappointing. It felt like the author was either trying for a "non-traditional" ending (not perfect and fuzzy happy) or bucking for a sequel. If non-traditional, then I'm kind of spooked - what a weird student-teacher dynamic - and annoyed, since not enough ends were tied up (why and how was the cat killed?). If a sequel...well, we'll see.
Otherwise, I really enjoyed the first section of the book, with Reason describing her life prior to the first chapter. The way that we learned details about certain things only gradually was pretty cool as well.

Doh. Now I see the "Magic or Madness Trilogy" subtitle. Yay reading comprehension!
