I found the first half of this book really interesting - a clear and concise explanation of consumer capitalism and its affect on our personal lives; loss of depth, reliance on "stuff" etc etc. However the second half of the book was quite disappointing. It switched straight into a gospel message - providing a very tenuous link between our loss of self due to consumerism and the way which this can be resolved if we find our identities and fulfillment in *the love and hope of jesus*. This argument deemed Christianity the "easy answer", the solution to all ones problems. I found this very weak and problematic as the book didn't even attempt to address any of the difficult questions regarding the nature of belief or problems with religion. Also this kind of argument relies on an assumption that the gospel overrides all else and is the only viable way to attain the happiness and fulfillment we are clearly lacking in capitalist society, which makes for a very one-sided and ill considered argument.
