bookshelves: kid-lit, middle-grade
Read in August, 2007

i loooved the hardback cover: big juicy red popsicle. that's something i would be proud of it it were my book. (even though obviously someone else designed it.) so it was cool to discover that the design actually tied in to the plot quite well, both at the very beginning and the very end of the book. good job, cover designer. i wondered how i would like the writing itself, since the protagonist (annemarie aka shug) is 12 years old. the same age as those bsc-ers, yes, but most of the YA books i've been reading are truly YA and not 'middle grade.' that wasn't a problem, though. i think this is appropriate for 12-year-olds but definitely not a baby book. it has some funny moments, some sweet moments, some painful moments. very realistic, and i'm eager to see what jenny han does next.
