I found it difficult to get into the book at first, but after the first few chapters the pace seemed to quicken and I much enjoyed this my first foray into the 'other' books of Alexander McCall Smith (i.e. not the No 1 Ladies Detective stories).
The plot is quirky and the picture of Edinburgh life is refreshing, painted skillfully whilst not slowing the story.

Helena I too found it difficult to get into ,then i enjoyed it ,.I have however not bought others in the series .

Gill We have the second, which I had mooched as well, as Mark was interested in the idea of a series based on a Philosophy Club. I'm starting another "Cat who.." now that I'll relist on BookMooch when I'm finished with it.
