4.5 - I really enjoyed this book. It was a well paced and highly creative YA novel. The system of magic is especially unique and interesting. Sabriel’s magical abilities are channeled through bells. Sound and harmonics are a strongly woven theme throughout the novel. To me, it was reminiscent of the concept known as Music of the Spheres.

I have only two criticisms of this novel. Foremost, I was disappointed in the lack of character development in the main character. While I was drawn in by plot, I never really felt connected to, or invested in, Sabriel. I would have allowed for less action and more character interaction. Considering her background and the trial she is suddenly thrust into – including her only family member gone missing – we see very little emotion or conflict in Sabriel.

Secondly, I felt the ending was quite abrupt but that is really more of a personal preference than a true criticism. I enjoy a longer epilogue with a bit more wrap up. I would speculate that Nix chose this type this ending for impact – you find yourself exhaling a sigh of relief after a tense final battle, and certainly, the last two sentences really punctuate the theme of Life and Death.

This book is a valuable addition to the YA genre and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys good, imaginative storytelling.
